Things to Do on Valentine's Day if You're Single

Who the Heck is St. Valentine?

So somewhere along the way some saint was named Valentine. In fact if you do a little research you’ll find that there where actually three Saint Valentines way back when and I’m pretty sure that none of them were all that romantic. No one is even sure exactly which Valentine Valentine's Day was named after. So why is it even a Holiday in the first place? According to Wikipedia, Valentine’s day was actually removed from the Roman Book of Saints back in the late sixties. Still it sits on our calendar every year commercialized and reminding anyone that is not in a relationship, or that is in a lousy one, that they will not be getting flowers again this year. So thanks Valentine, you’re a real Saint

I’m wondering where the singles, or wannabe singles, holiday is. It’s time to fight back people. My suggestion is rather than a Saint we choose a Knight. Since there is no rhyme or reason to the Valentine name then we don’t need rhyme or reason either. I am thinking that McCartney’s Day would work, or even a good old “Happy Jagger Day”. It will be celebrated on February 13th so that we can stay up late, maybe party a little bit and then sleep straight through the 14th while all those romantics spend their money on gifts that aren’t usually “good enough” in the first place.

For now, just until my new Holiday makes it to the calender I have a whole bunch of fun suggestions for celebrating Valentine’s Day like a true single. Whether you have a little cash to spend or you don’t you are sure to find something to make this an amazing Knight McCartney’s Day, I mean Saint Valentine’s Day.

Where to begin is the difficult part.

Make this night about you.....

  • How about an all out slumber party! You can do this with one friend or five friends, heck you could even do it with your mom if she's available. A few funny movies, and I mean funny, stay away from sappy. My personal favorites for a non sappy night include, Something About Mary, Meet the Parents, The Outsiders, Dazed and Confused, and Tommy Boy. You could also make it a theme night and just watch movies from the 80’s or some other idea. Remember, you have all night at a sleepover, so how about giving your nails a make over, your toes too if you feel like it. Have some munchies and order a pizza, bring along some snuggly p.j.s and you’re ready for a fun filled night with someone you love. Feel free to add any of the following idea to your slumber party as well.

Tommy Boy (Holy Schnike Edition)
Amazon Price: $3.80
List Price: $8.99
There's Something About Mary (Full Screen Edition)
Amazon Price: $3.90
List Price: $14.98
  • A full blown pedi would be nice. You can pick up soothing beads for your feet and Dr. Scholl's makes a decent foot spa. Ahhh, that's nice. Don’t stop there, do a little trimming and dry skin removal too. Finish off with a peppermint cream and your choice of color. If someone will be joining you for this soothing night ask them to bring some of their polish colors along for more choices.
  • You could pull out a couple of wii games (or your system choice). I suggest singing and dancing games because belting out a tune, no matter what you sound like, feels really good and let’s face it dancing is just plain good for you. If you don’t have a game system who cares? My friends and I just recently spent a three hours of our girls night singing and dancing to our favorite itunes songs and believe me none of us are spring chickens anymore. In all honesty I could have a pretty good time doing the same thing by myself.

  • Try an exercise DVD. No silly, not for the exercise, for the laughs. Pick up a Belly Dancing DVD, or a Stripper Workout (you don’t take off your clothes). You could try Zumba if you haven’t tried it yet. It’s quite amusing for newbies, it's good for you, and you feel great when you're done.
  • Grab hold of some flowers and do some flower arranging. Be creative. The smell is nice and the flowers are cheerful. Allergic to flowers? You could switch it up and try some cake decorating. There are all sorts of websites that teach you as you go, explore a little bit so you know what you will be working on and you will have the supplies handy.
  • Zodiac your night. Get some books and spend some time comparing signs with your friends. It can be so interesting to look at what your birth sign means to your personalty. Believe in it or not you just might find some interesting information about yourself and your friends.
  • I was at friend of a friends' house recently and the hostess was offering quite the party. She had set out margarita glasses, small paint brushes and paint. We listened to some music, had some snacks and laughed all night as we designed and decorated our own beautiful glasses. Even my girlfriend who is not much into crafts had a great time and created a masterpiece of her own.
  • When all else fails go shopping, or at least to the mall. If you have the money buy yourself something wonderful. If you’re short on cash just wander around the mall and visit stores like The Sharper Image where it’s fun to look around, but you don’t feel that horrible craving to buy. Grab a coffee, find a bench and people watch, there’s almost always fun in that. If you’re up for it head over to a department store and let them give you a free make over. Most of them do offer that service.

The important thing is not how anyone else is spending their day, the important thing is how you spend your February 14th. Have fun and enjoy yourself and you will find yourself looking forward to Valentine's day next year. You might even find yourself hoping to be single next year too.

Your comment about not thinking about how everybody else is spending the day is the best bit of this (excellent) hub.

I wasted most of my teenage years feeling sorry for myself because I was convinced that everybody else was somewhere better than wherever I was, and they were all having a good time (without me).

2patricias, thank you for your sweet words. I am so glad you enjoyed it. I also don't think that you are the only on that tortured yourself as a teen. I spent a few of those years feeling pretty sorry for myself as well. Thanks gain.
